San Francisco Cal

Cal Collins is a jazz guitarist that I wasn't aware of during my early years of following such music. As obsessed as I was with jazz guitarists through my college years and beyond, I continue to discover new names and amazing talents as the years progress. I came across my first Cal Collins album a few years back and for $3 figured there's always room for another jazz guitarist in the collection, but I was more impressed than I might have expected. He combines a natural blues feeling over some plain old righteous traditional jazz interpretations. I now own several of his albums, all of which are out of print LP's that have yet to see a commercial CD output, and all of them are very good. He has a fair number of recordings to choose from and I just don't get why there is so little exposure. Some company will eventually release these for contemporary consumption, but until then, please enjoy this great piece of San Francisco in the state of Cal...

Until then

thanks for Cal. Do you have any more? He had a great solo album that had a killer version of "I'm so lonesome I could cry" on it.

THe Ohio 4 is the only one I know of on CD

let me know...

I will check but I have just one other LP by Collins that I haven't posted yet (3 all together). I'm pretty certain that I don't have that tune I'm afraid, but I will post the other LP soon.

Hello Arkiver

thanks to you I have discovered a guitar master. Cal Collins is a great! Do you know of any existing recording of him with Benny Goodman? (around half 70's I think)
Once again ,thanks a lot.

Although that does sound familiar to me I do not have any such Cal Collins recording. Of course, I would like to have everything he ever recorded but I am so pleased to have what I have. There is something about his sound that is so relaxed and real, natural. I'm so glad that my post has opened a new door for you. I know how much I enjoy such discoveries, ones that last a life time, like Cal. Thanks for your comment "Fingerstyle"!

Hello Arkiver

I'm quite sure you already know the blog but, in case you don't, if you visit the great

http://jazzy62-jazzyblues.blogspot.com

you'll find a lot of Cal Collins there.
Thank you, all the best.

Oh yes, Jazzy is legend for all things jazz and especially great guitar works. I'm just a journeyman here. But thanks for the suggestion!

Hello Arkiver

just a question: did you succeed in downloading 'Cincinnati to LA' from Jazzy? I couldn't but I'd like so much to get it. Is there any possibility to send it to me some way? My mail is:
guitarideamail@yahoo.it

thanks a lot

Hi FS. I'm afraid that Jazzy's suggestion made no sense to me but I spent quite a lot of time trying to figure out what I could change in the link to get it to work, but no luck. You can see from the subsequent comments that you and I are not alone but Jazzy hasn't responded. Perhaps it got pulled for some reason. Too bad...

Ok. I just hoped you had had the chance to download it. I'm in debt with you for making me discovery what wonderful guitarist Cal Collins was. I'll keep searching for it and if there are news I'll soon tell you.
Thanks a lot

You welcome, Arkiver. If everything works fine, I'll send to you in the next weeks another Collins' thing I am sure you will like.
I owe this to you, both for Van Eps' Seven string guitar and for your Collins' posts.
All the best

hi from Canada,

i know it's a long time ago it was there but is it possible to reload CAL COLLINS - Cincinnati to L.A. (1978) ?

even it's mp3 or flac all is ok...

thanks

Durge & The Oldies said...

I'm afraid I don't have that Collins recording. I can reload this one (San Fran) or any other one on this blog if you're interested, but that one is not in my record collection. Sorry.
